# Perf-DKMS Test Suite - Quick Start Guide

## Build Instructions

```bash
cd <path-to-rocm-systems>/experimental/perf-dkms/test_apps
mkdir -p build && cd build
cmake ..
make -j$(nproc)
```

## Run All Tests

```bash
cd <path-to-rocm-systems>/experimental/perf-dkms/test_apps
./run_all_tests.sh
```

## Usage with Perf

Example monitoring a specific test:

# Monitor VALU instructions

# Monitor multiple counters
perf stat -e amd_gpu/SQ_INSTS_VALU/,amd_gpu/SQ_INSTS_SALU/ ./build/valu_heavy/valu_heavy

# Profile with rocprof
rocprof --stats ./build/valu_heavy/valu_heavy
```

## Prerequisites

- ROCm/HIP installation (tested with ROCm 5.x+)
- CMake 3.16 or later
- C++17 compatible compiler
- AMD GPU hardware

## Troubleshooting

**Build fails with "HIP not found":**
```bash
export HIP_PATH=/opt/rocm
cmake -DHIP_PATH=/opt/rocm ..
```

**No HIP devices found at runtime:**
```bash
# Verify GPU is detected
rocminfo

# Check drivers are loaded
lsmod | grep amdgpu
```

**Tests crash or hang:**
- Check GPU status: `rocm-smi`
- Review dmesg for GPU errors: `dmesg | tail`
- Ensure sufficient GPU memory
