Changelog for ROCm Compute Profiler

Full documentation for ROCm Compute Profiler is available at https://rocm.docs.amd.com/projects/rocprofiler-compute/en/latest/.

ROCm Compute Profiler 3.8.0 for ROCm 7.15.0

Added

  • Added --pc-sampling-rows analyze option to cap the PC sampling table at the top N rows (default 10); set 0 to show all. Must be non-negative.

  • Added --overwrite profile mode option to explicitly allow replacing existing workload output.

  • Improved GPU Benchmarking and Roofline profiling/analysis support for gfx1150/gfx1151/gfx1152 architectures.

    • gfx11 supports Wave Matrix Multiply Accumulate (WMMA), replacing MFMA operations.
  • Added experimental Triton support to ML API tracing. Profile with --experimental --triton-trace to emit a ROCTX marker per Triton/Inductor kernel launch attributed to the user call site, and analyze with --experimental --list-triton-operators or --experimental --triton-operator <pattern> to list or filter Triton operators independently of Torch.

  • Added support for GPU metrics on gfx1153 hardware.

Changed

  • Split Python version requirements by mode. Profile mode now runs on Python 3.8+ (standard library only). Analyze mode requires Python 3.9+ and exits with a clear message on older interpreters instead of failing with an import error.

  • --pc-sampling-sorting-type now defaults to count (was offset), so the PC sampling table shows the most-sampled instructions first.

  • Renamed the Pct of Peak / PoP analysis column to Percent of Peak in analysis output.

  • --torch-trace now wraps the tensor methods to, cpu, cuda, and contiguous by default. Previously these wraps were enabled by setting ROCPROFCOMPUTE_ROCTX_DEEP_TENSOR_WRAPS=1. Set ROCPROFCOMPUTE_ROCTX_DEEP_TENSOR_WRAPS=0 (or false, no, off) to disable them.

  • Renamed the torch-trace output files and directory from torch_trace_* to ml_api_trace_*.

  • Profile mode now errors when the target workload directory is non-empty unless --overwrite is passed. --bench-only likewise requires --overwrite before replacing an existing roofline.csv.

  • Renamed num_hbm_channels to num_memory_channels in machine specifications to unify memory channel reporting across GPU families.

Removed

  • Removed the multi-node analysis options --nodes, --list-nodes (analyze mode) and the experimental --spatial-multiplexing option (profile and analyze modes). These features did not work as expected and will be redesigned in a future release.

Optimized

Resolved issues

  • The Dual VALU (VOPD) instruction mix metric is now reported for gfx115x in the WGP panel.

  • Fixed multi-user roofline benchmarking on shared systems: the per-GPU lock file under /tmp/rocprof-compute-benchmark/ is now created world-readable/writable (0666) so any user can acquire it, regardless of which user created it first or the active umask. Stale unreadable lock files left by older versions in a sticky /tmp cannot be repaired automatically and must be removed manually by their owner or an administrator.

  • Fixed CDNA memory chart CLI output to show the numbered 3. Memory Chart header without repeating the default per-kernel normalization label.

Upcoming changes

Known issues

  • Workloads profiled with earlier versions must be re-profiled before analysis. The sysinfo schema changed and older workload directories are not compatible.

  • CLI mode block 4 Roofline plot's legend will not appear if there are too many kernels to list, in relation to the user's terminal size. Same per-kernel roofline rate metrics and AI plot point details can be read in block 4's preceding tables.

ROCm Compute Profiler 3.7.0 for ROCm 7.14.0

Added

  • Added --bench-only profile mode option to run the roofline microbenchmark standalone (without profiling an application or collecting performance counters). No application run is required. Useful for regenerating roofline.csv in an existing workload directory or running the microbenchmark on systems where only HIP is available but rocprofiler-sdk is not.

  • Added LDS arithmetic intensity as a roofline plot point and analysis database field.

  • Added backward compatibility for live attach mode to work with older ROCm 7.x.x releases.

  • Added support for GPU metrics on gfx1150 and gfx1152 hardware.

  • Added roofline benchmarking support for gfx1150 and gfx1152 hardware.

Changed

  • Moved --gui and --tui analyze options to experimental status. These features now require the --experimental flag to be enabled (e.g., rocprof-compute analyze --experimental --gui).

  • --output-format csv in analyze mode now uses the database analysis workflow and produces one CSV per analysis view. Requires --format-rocprof-output rocpd and no longer prints the report to the terminal (matching db format).

  • Changed ratio metric aggregation from AVG(A/B) (arithmetic mean of per-dispatch ratios) to SUM(A)/SUM(B) (ratio of totals) across all analysis YAML configurations and all GPU architectures. SUM(A)/SUM(B) is a weighted average where each dispatch contributes proportionally to its denominator magnitude (duration, access count, cycle count). Single-dispatch workloads are unaffected (mathematically identical). Multi-dispatch workloads with different kernels or varying durations will see corrected values.

  • Added operator statistics and per-operator summary table in the analysis output of torch operators profiling. Added the following statistics for every torch operators and its children:

    • Number of invocations
    • Number of kernel dispatches
    • Min/Max/Mean and Total duration of kernel dispatches
  • --torch-trace now captures backward-pass and nested operators that were previously missed or misattributed. The first run builds and caches a helper under ~/.cache/rocprofiler-compute/, so it takes longer than later runs.

  • Profile workload output folder name for Strix Halo series (gfx1151) is changed from strix_halo to rdna35_halo

  • Unified accumulator handling across profile and analyze so each _ACCUM-suffixed counter is preserved instead of collapsing to SQ_ACCUM_PREV_HIRES

  • Reworded the N/A metric-evaluation warning to "divide-by-zero or empty counter data" (the prior "missing counter data" message could only fire for non-missing causes).

  • PC sampling in profile mode now opts in via the --experimental --pc-sampling option. Explicit -b 21 / --block 21 is no longer accepted on its own.

  • PC sampling profiling now emits only ps_file_results.json. The per-sample, kernel-trace, and agent-info CSV artifacts are no longer produced or consumed by analysis.

  • PC sampling analysis without -k now shows the full per-instruction table across all kernels (with a Kernel_Name column), identical in schema to the single-kernel view, instead of a collapsed source-line summary.

  • --pc-sampling-interval now defaults to a method-appropriate value (512 microseconds for host_trap, 1048576 cycles for stochastic). Stochastic intervals are validated to be a power of 2 and at least 65536; previously invalid values were passed through silently.

Removed

  • --path and --subpath options have been removed from profile mode. Use --output-directory instead.

  • Removed redundant if (X != 0) else None divide-by-zero guards from metric equations across all analysis YAML configurations. Division by zero is already handled by the metric evaluation engine, which returns "N/A" for inf and NaN results.

Optimized

  • Flattened the analyze-mode PMC dataframe to a single-index frame.

  • Eliminated "missing counter" warnings during analyze when profile-mode -b was used. Analyze now skips metrics outside the selected blocks.

Resolved issues

  • Roofline panel L1/L2 bandwidth and arithmetic intensity on gfx942 and gfx950 now use the correct 128B cache line, matching the values reported in the Speed-of-Light and vL1D/L2 cache panels for the same run. Bandwidth values on these architectures are 2x and AI values are 0.5x compared to prior releases.

  • Fixed crash "ROCPROF_OUTPUT_PATH environment variable must be set" that aborted profiling when ROCPROF_OUTPUT_PATH was unset or empty (observed when profiling shell-script targets such as rocprof-compute profile -o /tmp/out -- bash run.sh). The collector now silently falls back to a documented default instead of aborting.

  • Fixed inf display for metrics with zero-denominator counters (e.g., L2-Fabric Write Latency when no write requests are issued). The metric evaluation path now catches inf scalar results and returns "N/A", consistent with existing NaN handling.

  • Kernels with missing counter data after iteration multiplexing imputation are now excluded from metrics calculations. A warning at analysis time lists the affected kernels. Their execution times remain visible in Top Stats.

  • Fixed empirical roofline benchmark to correctly produce double the Matrix BF16 Gflop/s on gfx90a (AMD Instinct MI200 Series) GPUs.

  • PC sampling collection now runs when requested via the pc_sampling block alias (--block pc_sampling), instead of being silently skipped.

Upcoming changes

  • Roofline support for RDNA3.5 gfx115x devices.

Known issues

  • On gfx1151, TCP_REQ_sum is zero in single-pass counter collection, so the related GL0 metrics always reports zero. This will be fixed in a future release.

  • On gfx1151, $max_mclk is not automatically populated in sysinfo, so the related bandwidth metrics may be incorrect. Use amd-smi to obtain the maximum memory clock and provide it via --specs-correction.

  • In analyze mode, --nodes is not suitable for multi-rank analysis. Use --path with the rank-specific path (such as, --path workload/1) instead of --path workload --nodes 1.

ROCm Compute Profiler 3.6.0 for ROCm 7.13.0

Added

  • Added L2 memory bandwidth derived metrics under --membw-analysis to allow L2 memory bandwidth specific profiling and analysis metric block 30.

  • Added AMD Strix Halo (gfx1151) support

    • New memory hierarchy visualization for RDNA 3.5 (gfx115X) in analyze CLI mode.
  • Introduced support for MI350P GPU

  • --view table option in analyze mode to force all TTY output to plain tables and ignore cli_style from YAML config (e.g. mem_chart, Roofline charts render as tables). The --view argument is reserved for future TTY views (e.g. other chart styles).

  • Added EA memory bandwidth derived metrics under --membw-analysis to allow EA memory bandwidth specific profiling and analysis metric block 30.

Changed

  • Standalone roofline (--roof-only option) in profile mode now creates roofline.csv only. HTML roofline charts are generated via rocprof-compute analyze. The calc_ai_profile() function has been removed; calc_ai_analyze() is the single source of truth for arithmetic intensity calculation.

    • Roofline visualization options (--sort, --mem-level, --roofline-data-type) have moved from profile mode to analyze mode.
  • Standardized unit naming in analysis configs and Python utilities: pct/Pct → Percent, instr → Instructions.

  • Profile mode output format:

    • Profile mode now creates separate counter collection files for each application replay (pmc_perf_.csv or results_.csv).
    • Analyze mode automatically merges these files into a unified pmc_perf.csv containing information from all application replays during pre-processing.
  • ROCm Compute Profiler now builds and runs profile mode with vanilla Python without requiring any Python dependencies to be installed via pip.

    • Note that analysis mode will still require Python dependencies and will report any missing packages.

Removed

  • Removed HIP API tracing since it's out-of-scope for ROCm Compute Profiler and the trace files were not being analyzed.

Optimized

  • Filtering for block 21 (-b 21) in profile mode, now only performs pc sampling and skips unnecessary counter collection
    • Filtering for block 21 in analysis mode, now skips metrics calculations and only shows kernel/dispatch/system statisitcs and pc sampling table

Resolved issues

  • Fixed roofline benchmark MFMA FP16/BF16/INT8 peaks for MI 350

  • Fixed issue where pc sampling profiling fails with multi-argument commands and live process attachment

Upcoming changes

  • --path and --subpath options are deprecated and will be removed in a future release.
  • Intermediate CSV generation (results_*.csv) from rocpd databases during profiling is deprecated and will be removed in a future release. The analyze step will read .db files directly.
  • --retain-rocpd-output is deprecated and will be removed in a future release. .db files will be retained by default.

Known issues

  • For Strix Halo, the roofline metrics table will have N/A values for "peak" field
    • This will be fixed by adding empirical benchmark support for Strix Halo in a future release

ROCm Compute Profiler 3.5.0 for ROCm 7.12.0

Added

  • Native tool to perform counter collection using the ROCprofiler-SDK public API. It is supported starting with ROCm version 7.0.0 and later.

    • Native tool is now the default method for counter collection.
    • Native tool for counter collection will not be used under the following conditions:
      • A specific profiler is provided through the ROCPROF environment variable.
      • The --no-native-tool option is provided, forcing use of the default profiler.
      • A dynamic attach is performed to profile a running process.
  • Iteration multiplexing to collect counters within a single application run.

  • The --torch-trace option to enable mapping of PyTorch operators to collected counter values during profiling.

    • This is an experimental feature and requires using the --experimental option.
  • Runtime compilation of Roofline benchmarking:

    • GPU kernels from rocm-amdgpu-bench repository have been moved into the ROCm Compute Profiler and are now compiled at runtime using local HIP and HIPRTC Python wrappers.
    • Roofline binaries compiled from rocm-amdgpu-bench repository have been removed, as Roofline runtime compilation performs the equivalent work as the Roofline binaries.
    • Support for collecting standalone Roofline empirical peaks without running the entire ROCm Compute Profiler's profile mode, through an entry point in benchmark.py. Running the benchmark.py Python file replaces calling the standalone Roofline binary.
  • Synced the latest metric descriptions to public-facing documentation.

    • Updated metric units in the documentation to improve readability.
  • --output-directory option in profile mode to allow parameterized output paths for profiling data.

  • Automatic MPI rank detection during profiling, with output directories created per MPI rank.

  • --experimental flag to enable in‑development experimental features. This flag is required when using any experimental functionality.

    • Use rocprof-compute --experimental --help to see currently available experimental features.
  • GPU benchmark locking for Roofline benchmarking to prevent concurrent profiling conflicts on the same GPU.

    • Multiple rocprof-compute processes can safely profile on different GPUs in parallel.
    • Processes attempting to benchmark on the same GPU will wait with user-visible feedback and execute sequentially.
    • Lock applies specifically to the roofline.csv file generated during benchmarking, not other files generated in profile mode.
  • Missing metric descriptions for gfx950 and gfx942 architecture.

  • Added --membw-analysis under experimental features to allow memory bandwidth specific profiling and analysis with metric block 30.

Changed

  • The default output format for the underlying ROCprofiler-SDK tool has been changed from csv to rocpd.

    • If the ROCprofiler-SDK rocpd public library is not available, the tool will fall back to csv format.
  • Changed the option --rocprofiler-sdk-library-path to --rocprofiler-sdk-tool-path to more accurately describe that it selects the path to the ROCprofiler-SDK tool (librocprofiler-sdk-tool.so) and not the library.

  • Standalone roofline (--roof-only option) in profile mode now creates HTML file output instead of PDF file output for roofline charts.

  • Corrected kernel filtering during Roofline profiling to find substrings instead of requiring full kernel names.

Removed

  • Removed the VL1 Lat metric for AMD Instinct MI300 Series GPUs, as these GPUs do not support the TCP_TCP_LATENCY_sum counter.

Optimized

  • Improved the responsiveness of menu and dropdown buttons in TUI analyze mode for a smoother user experience.

Resolved issues

  • Improved VALU FP16 roofline benchmark to achieve peak performance by using vector types for packed math instructions.

  • Implemented NOISE_CLAMP for L2 cache metrics to handle negative values from multi-pass profiling variance:

    • Negative values are clamped to 0 (eliminates physically impossible negative counts).
    • Warnings issued only when relative error exceeds 1% (anomaly detection).
    • Added FAQ documentation explaining the "Counter variance corrected" warning.
  • Corrected the meaning of --dispatch option in profile mode in argparser to clarify that it controls which kernel iterations to profile and not which dispatch IDs to profile.

  • Corrected peak VALU Roofline profiling and analysis by removing FP8 VALU and BF16 VALU benchmarking that was erroneously added during implementation of these datatypes into roofline feature.

  • Corrected the functioning of the --dispatch option to act as a 1-based index and ensure that correct kernel iterations are being profiled.

  • Analysis mode bugfixes:

    • Improved warnings when metrics cannot be calculated due to missing counter data.
    • Fixed the check to prevent displaying tables with columns full of N/A values.
    • Improved the detection of empty values when metric evaluation fails due to missing counter data.
  • Fixed the issue of missing counter data when profiling workloads that spawn multiple child processes.

  • Fixed the issue where the maximum memory clock detected from the amd-smi interface incorrectly used the max gfx clock.

  • Fixed the issue of incorrect values from amd-smi when some GPU devices were hidden by ROCR or HIP environment variables.

  • Removed redundant warnings for compute/memory partition not found for AMD Instinct MI300 series and later GPUs by skipping the partition checks.

  • Corrected the formula for metrics related to reads from L2 cache to HBM for AMD Instinct MI350 Series GPUs.

Upcoming changes

  • Move Roofline visualization to analysis mode
    • Roofline plot files will no longer be generated in profiling mode; Roofline plots will be generated automatically when user runs analysis on a workload. A deprecation warning has been added during profiling mode to notify users of this change.

ROCm Compute Profiler 3.4.0 for ROCm 7.2.0

Added

  • --list-blocks <arch> option to general options. It lists the available IP blocks on the specified arch (similar to --list-metrics), however cannot be used with --block.

  • Analysis configs YAMLs are now managed with the new config management workflow in tools/config_management/.

  • amdsmi python API is used instead of amd-smi CLI to query GPU specifications.

  • Empty cells replaced with N/A for unavailable metrics in analysis.

Deprecated

  • Active CUs metric has been deprecated and replaced by CU Utilization.

Removed

  • Removed database mode from ROCm Compute Profiler in favor of other visualization methods, rather than Grafana and MongoDB integration, such as the upcoming Analysis DB-based Visualizer.
    • Plotly server based standalone GUI
    • Commandline based Textual User Interface

Optimized

Resolved issues

  • Fixed sL1D metric values showing up as N/A in memory chart diagram

Known issues

Negative Values in Analyze Mode

Negative counter values occur due to timing mismatches in asynchronous hardware performance counters during multi-pass profiling, which is required due to hardware limitations (e.g., perfmon_config constraints).

An initial fix was implemented to clamp all negative values to zero using MAX(difference, 0), eliminating invalid results but potentially masking significant anomalies.

Negative values, when clamped, typically align with expected results and do not interfere with the overall accuracy or general average output in hardware counter profiling. This is because the variance caused by timing mismatches is typically minimal and does not significantly impact the profiling data.

A proposed long-term solution uses threshold-based clamping, distinguishing between minor noise and significant deviations, with warnings for larger issues.

  • Fixed an issue where accumulation counters could not be collected on AMD Instinct MI100.
  • Fixed an issue of kernel filtering not working in the roofline chart

Known issues

  • MI300A/X L2-Fabric 64B read counter may display negative values - The rocprof-compute metric 17.6.1 (Read 64B) can report negative values due to incorrect calculation when TCC_BUBBLE_sum + TCC_EA0_RDREQ_32B_sum exceeds TCC_EA0_RDREQ_sum.

    • A workaround has been implemented using max(0, calculated_value) to prevent negative display values while the root cause is under investigation.
  • The profile mode crashes when --format-rocprof-output json is selected.

    • As a workaround, this option should either not be provided or should be set to csv instead of json. This issue does not affect the profiling results since both csv and json output formats lead to the same profiling data.

  • Decreased profiling time by not collecting unused counters in post-analysis.
  • Updated Dash to >=3.0.0 (for web UI).
  • Changed the condition when Roofline PDFs are generated during general profiling and --roof-only profiling (skip only when --no-roof option is present).
  • Updated Roofline binaries:
    • Rebuild using latest ROCm stack
    • Minimum OS distribution support minimum for roofline feature is now Ubuntu 22.04, RHEL 8, and SLES15 SP6.

  • Fixed standalone GUI crashing
  • Fixed L2 read/write/atomic bandwidths on AMD Instinct MI350 series.

Known issues

  • On AMD Instinct MI100, accumulation counters are not collected, resulting in the following metrics failing to show up in the analysis: Instruction Fetch Latency, Wavefront Occupancy, LDS Latency

    • As a workaround, use the environment variable ROCPROF=rocprof, to use rocprof v1 for profiling on AMD Instinct MI100.
  • GPU id filtering is not supported when using rocprofv3.

  • Analysis of previously collected workload data will not work due to sysinfo.csv schema change.

    • As a workaround, re-run the profiling operation for the workload and interrupt the process after 10 seconds. Followed by copying the sysinfo.csv file from the new data folder to the old one. This assumes your system specification hasn't changed since the creation of the previous workload data.
  • Analysis of new workloads might require providing shader/memory clock speed using --specs-correction operation if amd-smi or rocminfo does not provide clock speeds.

  • Memory chart on ROCm Compute Profiler CLI might look corrupted if the CLI width is too narrow.

  • Roofline feature is currently not functional on Azure Linux 3.0 and Debian 12.

Upcoming changes

  • rocprof v1/v2/v3 interfaces will be removed in favor of the ROCprofiler-SDK interface, which directly accesses rocprofv3 C++ tool. Using rocprof v1/v2/v3 interfaces will trigger a deprecation warning.
    • To use ROCprofiler-SDK interface, set environment variable ROCPROF=rocprofiler-sdk and optionally provide profile mode option --rocprofiler-sdk-library-path /path/to/librocprofiler-sdk.so. Add --rocprofiler-sdk-library-path runtime option to choose the path to ROCprofiler-SDK library to be used.
  • Hardware IP block based filtering using -b option in profile mode will be removed in favor of analysis report block based filtering using -b option in profile mode.
  • MongoDB database support will be removed, and a deprecation warning has been added to the application interface.
